What alternative fuels are there?

The main forms of alternative fuels are: Biodiesel, Electricity, Ethanol, Hydrogen, Natural Gas and Propane.

Biodiesel -  is a renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled cooking grease. For further information see our About Biodiesel article.

Electricity - is used to power plug-in electric vehicles. Hybrid vehicles are fuelled with liquid fuels, like petrol, but use batteries to recapture energy otherwise lost during braking (ultimately boosting fuel economy).

Ethanol - is a widely used renewable fuel made from corn and other plant materials. It is blended with gasoline for use in vehicles. The most common blend of ethanol is E10 (10% ethanol, 90% petrol). Ethanol is also available as E85 (or flex fuel), a high-level ethanol blend containing 51% to 83% ethanol. E15 is a blend of 10.5% to 15% ethanol with petrol.

Hydrogen - is an alternative fuel that can be produced from diverse domestic resources. There are challenges in using hydrogen as a fuel as it is difficult to efficiently extract it from these compounds.

Natural Gas - is an odourless, gaseous mixture of hydrocarbons—predominantly made up of methane. Please see our Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) article for more information.

Propane - also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or propane autogas. Please see our Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) article for more information.

Use of these alternative fuels in Ford vehicles depends on the region your vehicle is made in and the model you have chosen. Please consult your owners manual for advise or speak to your local dealership.
