Transit Custom - a state-of-the-art workhorse
The Transit Custom sets new standards for a commercial vehicle in safeguarding its occupants and pedestrians. In fact, it’s the first and only vehicle in its segment to ever achieve a maximum 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. It’s also the first commercial vehicle to have received Euro NCAP Advanced rewards for technology. These are for two innovative technologies: Lane Keeping Alert and Ford SYNC® with Emergency Assistance, which can call the emergency services for you in the event of an accident.
In the unlikely event of an accident, Ford SYNC’s award-winning Emergency Assistance feature is triggered by an airbag activating or the fuel pump being cut off. So long as your mobile phone is connected to SYNC, the technology can use it to help make a direct call to the emergency services, giving them crucial information, such as your GPS coordinates, and enabling you to talk to them yourself. Emergency Assistance won ‘Best Mobile Innovation for Automotive Transport or Utilities’ at the 2012 Global Mobile Awards.
Hill Start Assist temporarily stops you rolling backwards when making a hill start. The system works by maintaining pressure to the braking system for an extra 2.5 seconds, giving you more time and control as you move your foot from brake pedal to accelerator. It’s also useful when you’re stopping and starting on slippery surfaces.
If it detects that you’re accidentally drifting out of lane, Lane Keeping Alert can alert you by vibrating the steering wheel and displaying a visual warning. (You can set the vibration to one of three levels of sensitivity.)
Driver Alert constantly monitors your driving behaviour and is designed to detect any changes which could be caused by fatigue. If it identifies that you’re becoming less vigilant, a warning icon appears in the display, suggesting you take a break. Ford won a prestigious Euro NCAP Advanced Reward for this technology*.
The Emergency Brake Light (EBL) system automatically flashes the hazard lights to warn other drivers when you brake heavily.

Transit Custom is the first and only van in its segment to have received the maximum 5-star rating by leading safety organisation Euro NCAP.
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) constantly monitors your van’s progress. It senses any deviations from your chosen driving line, such as if you start to skid, and automatically corrects your road position, helping you keep control of the vehicle. The technology also helps reduce stopping distances in an emergency.
Load Adaptive Control (LAC) adjusts the Electronic Stability Programme according to whether the Transit Custom is laden or unladen. This ensures control and stability under all loading conditions.
Roll-over Mitigation (ROM) monitors the Transit Custom and identifies dangerous driving conditions that could lead to it rolling over. The system then triggers ESP to intervene, control the speed and restore stability.
Trailer Sway Control (TSC) detects ‘snaking’ or trailer sway and reduces the Transit Custom’s speed to help solve the problem, making towing more controlled. It slows the vehicle down by reducing the engine’s torque and gradually increasing the brake pressure on all wheels.
Our advanced Traction Control System (TCS) eliminates excessive wheelspin and gives you the best possible grip, performance and stability, just when you need it most. The system constantly monitors and adjusts the power delivered to the vehicle’s individual wheels ensuring maximum contact and grip, when you’re accelerating.
The Transit Custom combines an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with an electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) technology, which balances braking effort between front and rear, depending on whether the vehicle is laden or unladen. The result is effective braking and steering stability, crucially when braking mid corner, and improved short distance stopping whatever the conditions.
Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) helps the Transit Custom achieve maximum braking effectiveness in an emergency situation. The system senses how much pressure you’ve applied to the brake yourself and automatically increases it, if necessary. To further reduce your stopping distance, new Hydraulic Rear Boost provides additional brake pressure on the rear brakes during an emergency stop, when the ABS system is activated.
The Transit Custom is available with curtain, driver, passenger and side airbags and an improved activation system.
The Transit Custom is the first ever Transit with a body containing ultra-high-strength boron steel. Boron and other high or ultra-high-strength steels make up more than 40% of the bodyshell, including parts of the passenger safety cell. This makes it extremely light and crash-resistant. The design of the bodyshell has also been optimised, using over 4,500 computer simulations and 30 full-vehicle crash tests.
The Transit Custom has remote control central door-locking as standard. And this new locking system is more secure than ever. That’s because you can open one individual door without automatically unlocking the others. The other doors stay securely locked, until you activate a switch on the driver’s door. In fact, you can use this switch to control the locking and unlocking of all the vehicle’s doors.
All door locks are protected by anti-tamper shielding designed to prevent them being broken by drilling or chiselling.
A new advanced flip-key fob makes the Transit Custom doubly difficult to steal, as the transmitter within it has two channels – which means the key is virtually impossible for a thief to scan or copy. This rechargeable fob is also tamper and water-proof to withstand the stresses of the working environment.
A full-height, full-width steel bulkhead prevents thieves accessing the contents of your loadspace by breaking into your cab. It also acts as a safety feature, protecting you from being hit by your cargo or tools, in the event of an accident.
The new Transit Custom is available with an optional perimeter alarm system, which is set off if the doors or bonnet are opened by force. A more sophisticated Thatcham Category 1 alarm system is also available. This automatically arms itself when you lock the vehicle and a powerful alarm sounds if triggered by forced entry, the vehicle being lifted, or if the motion sensors pick up any movement inside.
A battery back-up sounder is an additional, secondary alarm system which comes with the Thatcham alarm option. This will sound a siren when the alarm is triggered. It has its own battery so will activate even if someone disconnects the vehicle battery.
