S-MAX engines and technology
The S-MAX delivers an exhilarating drive via a range of refined, powerful, high-performance and fuel-efficient engines. There is a perfect engine and transmission package whatever your needs, from doing the school run to taking a drive through the wilderness en route to your next adventure.

And now, as part of the range of Ford ECOnetic Technologies, the advanced Ford EcoBoost SCTi petrol engine technology offers improved driving dynamics with reduced CO2 emissions. Together with the new Ford PowerShift transmission, the Ford S-MAX is more than ever a true sporting icon.
Ford EcoBoost SCTi engine
Our class-leading range of turbo diesel engine is now joined in the Ford S-MAX by the first of a new generation of high-efficiency Ford EcoBoost SCTi turbocharged petrol engines; these combine higher power and a broader spread of torque with reduced emissions and lower fuel consumption.

The range-topping 2.0-litre EcoBoost SCTi delivers 203 PS, with fuel consumption of only 8.1 l/100 km (34.9 mpg) (combined), reducing CO2 emissions by up to 20% (CO2 emissions are 189 g/km).
Ford PowerShift transmission
Ford PowerShift delivers a premium experience for driving enthusiasts. Featuring a new state-of-the-art six-speed automatic double-clutch transmission, it cleverly selects the next appropriate gear at exactly the right moment, delivering lightning-fast gear changes with no disruption to the flow of power.

You’ll also enjoy improved fuel economy compared to a conventional automatic. As well as maximum efficiency and fuel consumption, Ford PowerShift has a sport mode that allows you to switch gears at the flick of the gearshift but without the need to engage a clutch pedal.
Ford Duratorq TDCi Diesel engines
Our diesel engines range from the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi (115PS) and culminate in the awesome 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi (160 PS). The transient overboost is available on 2.0 TDCi providing that essential extra power when overtaking.
New 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi
The significantly improved 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi 140 PS (340 Nm) diesel engine is smooth, quiet and responsive. It offers CO2 emissions of only 143 g/km for the six-speed manual transmission version, while the PowerShift transmission option has CO2 emissions of just 159 g/km.
Euro 5 emission standards
The S-MAX engines are fully compliant with the new stringent Euro 5 emissions standards resulting in lower emissions and CO2 output.
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Traction Assist (TA) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
ESP with TA monitors the rotation of the wheels, as well as the steering wheel angle, yaw angle and sideways movement. If the sensors detect either the front or rear tyres slipping, the onboard computer modifies the engine power and applies the brakes to individual wheels. This provides an enhanced traction control function by reducing engine torque if the wheels spin when you accelerate. Your ability to pull away on slippery roads or loose surfaces is therefore improved while your driving safety is enhanced.

EBA ensures full braking force is available whenever necessary, helping reduce stopping distances in an emergency. And, should you need to brake heavily, the Emergency Brake Warning repeatedly flashes the rear brake lights to alert other drivers.
Interactive Vehicle Dynamics Control (IVDC) with Continuous Controlled Damping (CCD)
IVDC delivers notable improvements to handling, stability and braking performance. Each damper is adjusted five times per second to guarantee the best possible occupant comfort and road contact. You can also switch between suspension modes – sport, normal and comfort – as the mood takes you. (Option)

CCD works with Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) to reduce stopping distances on rough surfaces when ABS braking is applied.
Subframe mounted suspension
The improved suspension system in the S-MAX reduces steering friction and advances handling control. The front and rear suspension systems are subframe mounted for optimal performance, superior steering and a thoroughly comfortable ride. The systems achieve high lateral and camber stiffness and, at the same time, fine-tune longitudinal compliance to absorb bumps.
Steering and handling
The rack-and-pinion steering system with hydraulic power assistance provides the best possible steering feedback.

To produce enhanced stability, special attention has been given to the tuning of the suspension and steering systems. A wider track (front track 1,589 mm; rear 1,605 mm) and bush attachment base combine to provide resistance to roll movements.
Electric Hydraulic Power-Assisted Steering (EHPAS)
EHPAS is available with the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine. The system can easily determine individual driving situations, like country road cruising or parking, and automatically apply the precise level of hydraulic support. As speed increases, less steering assistance is required and EHPAS automatically stiffens the steering for better feedback and road contact.
