Award-winning technology
The Focus is designed to be one of the safest cars available. It was the first to win two prestigious Euro NCAP Advanced rewards, for the Ford Active City Stop and Lane Keeping Aid technologies.

The car also earned Euro NCAP’s maximum 5-star crash safety rating and an exceptional rating in the adult, child and pedestrian safety categories.

Find out about the wide range of technologies that make the vehicle itself safer and can also help you drive more safely.
Coordinated safety systems activate in a split-second
The Ford Focus is equipped with an advanced Intelligent Protection System (IPS), which coordinates a number of safety systems to protect you and your passengers.

As well as a rigid, impact-absorbing bodyshell, containing advanced high-tensile steels, there’s an array of airbags to shield the car’s occupants from every angle, plus a steering column and pedals that collapse away from the driver, to reduce the chance of injury in the event of an accident.
Stay in control whatever the conditions
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) constantly monitors your vehicle’s progress. It senses any deviations from your chosen driving line, such as if you start to skid, and automatically corrects your road position, helping you keep control of the car.

With stiffer front callipers and new front and rear friction materials, the latest generation of ESP gives you better response from the brake pedal and maximises braking effectiveness in difficult conditions.
Advanced systems for more controlled braking
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) combine to ensure that your braking is more controlled. The brake assembly has also been improved to give a swifter response.

Extra power for emergency braking
Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) helps the Focus achieve maximum braking effectiveness in an emergency situation. The system senses how much pressure you’ve applied to the brake yourself and automatically increases it, if necessary.

The Focus brakes for you, to avoid low speed collisions
The innovative Active City Stop helps you avoid a collision in slow-moving traffic or at speeds under 30kph. If the system detects the car in front has unexpectedly stopped, it automatically applies the brakes.
Active City Stop recently won a Euro NCAP Advanced Reward for safety.

Ultra-bright, low-energy headlights
Helping you see and be seen, optional bi-xenon headlights deliver twice as much light as standard halogen bulbs, while using less energy.

Auto High Beam. Helping you see, without blinding others.
A useful night-driving aid, Auto High Beam temporarily dips your headlights when it detects oncoming traffic or a vehicle ahead, stopping you dazzling other drivers. Then it automatically reverts back to high beam, giving you maximum visibility.

A rear-view mirror that stops you being dazzled
At night, you’ll drive more safely if you’re not constantly dazzled by the lights of the vehicles behind. The innovative auto-dimming rear-view mirror automatically detects headlight glare and switches to a dimmed setting.

An early warning if a tyre is going flat
If any of your tyres starts to lose pressure during your journey, the Deflation Detection System will warn you immediately, by lighting up an icon on the instrument panel. That way, you’ve the chance to stop safely and fix the problem.

Two advanced systems to help you stay in lane
First, if you begin to drift out of lane, Lane Departure Warning alerts you by vibrating your steering wheel and showing a visual warning on your driver information display. (You can set the vibration to one of three levels of sensitivity.)

Then, if you're slow to react or don’t respond, Lane Keeping Aid will help guide you safely back into the correct lane. Lane Keeping Aid has won a Euro NCAP Advanced Reward for its proven safety benefit.
Driver Alert tells you when you’re getting tired
Driver Alert constantly monitors your driving behaviour and is designed to detect any changes caused by fatigue. If you’re getting tired, a warning icon appears in the display, suggesting you take a break. This technology also won a prestigious Euro NCAP Advanced Reward.

Extra control during hill starts
Hill Start Assist stops you rolling backwards when making a hill start. The system works by maintaining pressure to the braking system for an extra 2.5 seconds, giving you more time and control as you move your foot from brake pedal to accelerator. It’s also useful when you’re stopping and starting on slippery surfaces.

Technology that alerts you to cars you can’t see
The Blind Spot Information System uses radar sensors to see vehicles that may be hidden in your blind spot, on either side of your car. It then alerts you with an orange light, clearly displayed in the driver side door mirror.

A safer kind of cruise control
Like normal cruise control, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)* lets you select and maintain your driving speed (from 15 mph to 115 mph**).
What makes ACC safer is that whenever it detects a vehicle ahead, it slows your car down to ensure it stays a pre-set distance away. Once the road in front of you is clear again, your car reverts back to your selected speed.

ACC also features Forward Alert*, a monitoring system that warns you if you accidentally get too close to the vehicle in front. The Forward Alert system is another winner of a Euro NCAP Advanced Reward.

*Only available on selected classes of car.
** Where legally permitted. Please note that ACC will not prevent collisions with stationary objects.
