Breathe easy for World Asthma Day: Ford cars have the ‘allergy-tested’ seal of approval
Cork, 30 April 2010 – To coincide with World Asthma Day which falls on May 4 this year, Ford is highlighting the “allergy-friendly” credentials of its award-winning range of cars. In 2004, the Ford C-MAX was awarded with an official ‘allergy-tested’ seal – the first Ford model to gain that accolade.
Today, nine Ford cars are certified by TÜV – the German standards and certification body – as having allergy-friendly interiors including Ka, Fiesta, Fusion, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga, Mondeo, S MAX and Galaxy. Ford remains the only car manufacturer in the world whose products carry official TÜV allergy-friendly certification.
“Ireland is close to top of the world league in terms of asthma sufferers as a percentage of our population – there are almost half a million Irish people with asthma”, commented Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford Ireland. “Because our full range of cars has official allergy friendly certification, we can have a positive impact on that very sizeable segment of our community whose asthma is very easily triggered by allergies. We see allergy-friendliness as sitting alongside energy reduction, low emissions and recyclability in the broader issue of sustainability for Ford”.
Ford Ireland is an official partner of the Asthma Society of Ireland.
To achieve the TÜV allergy friendly certification, extensive, scientifically verifiable tests are conducted by the standards body, including analysis of more than 100 materials and components within the car’s cabin aimed at identifying harmful substances or allergy-causing potential.
As part of Ford's development programme for vehicle interiors, Ford engineers reduce to the absolute minimum the use of materials such as latex, chrome and nickel that can provoke allergic reactions in some people. Additionally, all components likely to have direct and prolonged skin contact such as the steering wheel, seat covers and seat belts are also dermatologically tested.
Vehicles are also equipped with high-performance pollen filters that prevent allergic pollens from entering the car's interior and ensure a high level of cabin air quality.
